Building a Multi-Ethnic Children’s Library – Ezra Jack Keats – Plus Complaints About Weather

It is April 22, and here in Saint Paul we are in the middle of a snowstorm – we are expected to get 2-4 inches tonight.  This is the third snow storm in a week and even Minnesota has had enough.  There is a warning

Lectionary Sunday – Tabitha – Acts 9:36-43

36 In Joppa there was a disciple named Tabitha (in Greek her name is Dorcas); she was always doing good and helping the poor. 37 About that time she became sick and died, and her body was washed and placed in an upstairs room. (read more) Tabitha is a fascinating,

No Mirror’s in My Nana’s House

In light of the Dove post earlier this week, I thought that I’d share this song, performed by Sweet Honey in The Rock and shown on Nick Jr. The song has been a favorite of mine for a long time, but I had never seen the animation before today.  In researching the song, I discovered that there is also a picture book by the author of the song.  Look for it in future “Building a Multi-Ethnic Children’s Library” posts.

Wouldn’t it be awesome if we didn’t know that there was a societal definition of beauty?  That we knew that we were beautiful because we were shown love and we knew that we were made in the image of the beautiful creator?

Reimagine Beauty – Dove Forensic Sketch Artist Ad

When I started this blog I named it “Reimagine Imago,”  because I think that part of healing our world, our relationships with God, other and self requires imagining those things differently.  The images that we carry of ourselves, God and the people around us aren’t

Bee Bim Bop! – Building a Multi-Ethnic Children’s Library

Bee-Bim Bop! by Linda Sue Park.   Bee-Bim Bop! is so cute.  The rhymes are fun and rhytmic, and Ho Baek Lee’s illustrations are sweet and playful. The book tells the story of a child and mother preparing bee-bim bop, or bibim bop  a Korean dish

Motivation

I watched this Ted Talk, from Dan Ariely at TedX  Río de la Plata twice this weekend.  I was so mesmerized by his description of motivation that I needed to watch a second time so that I could internalize some of it. Ariely studies what behaviors

“Ethnic” Books – Please, Baby, Please

“Ethnic” Books – Please, Baby, Please

Pleasebaby1

I need a new title for this series, I HATE writing “Ethnic” everyone is “ethnic.”  I don’t want to call in minority, or multi-cultural or … any suggestions?

:All this springs from an article I came across and posted about a few days ago that mentioned that most Early Childhood Teachers couldn’t name books with a non-white protagonist.  So I’m working to share examples of Kid-Lit with non-white characters and illustrations.

Please, baby, please is a super fun book full of predictable text and adorable illustrations.  It is playful without being cartoon-y.

I could picture moms and dads reading and enjoying the story and laughing along with there pre-schoolers.   This book is available in soft cover, hard cover and board book.

April 14, 2013 I have really struggled with how to tell the story of Paul/Saul. There’s the cliche – when he met Jesus his name changed from Saul to Paul as a symbol of his new faith…Except that doesn’t seem to be true.  Saul is
